NCH Case Job Descriptions 1 -- Pharmacist Compounds and dispenses medications, following prescriptions issued by authorized medical practitioners. Weighs, measures and mixes drugs and other medicinal compounds and fills bottles or capsules with correct quantity and composition of preparation. Stores and preserves biological vaccines, serums and other drugs subject to deterioration, utilizing refrigeration and other pharmaceutical stock. May act as a consultant to health practitioners on mattes pertaining to pharmacy. Occasionally, assay medications to determine identity, purity, and strength. Responsible for centralized IV admixture, decentralized unit dose. Instructions patients on medications. May instruct pharmaceutical interns on matters pertaining to pharmacy. Supervises pharmaceutical technicians. Using computerized data system, records prescriptions, checks for drug interactions. Completes all pharmaceutical paperwork to insure reimbursement from insurance providers and Medicaid. Has access to patients medical records regarding medications. Interfaces directly with hospital personnel as well as outpatients. Supervises 3 to 5 pharmaceutical technicians assigned to shift. Works under the general guidance of director of medical services. Requires WA state RPh licensure with hospital experience. Must work well independently. Computer analyses expertise using health systems software essential. Works in relatively small enclosed area. Stands extensively. Must be able to work alternate weekends. May rotate shifts. 2 -- Housekeeper I Tends laundry machines to clean articles such as bedding, bags, surgical materials and work clothes. Loads articles into washer and adds specified amount of detergent, soap or other cleaning agents. Turns valve to fill washer with water. Starts machine that automatically washes and rinses articles. Lifts clean, wet articles from washer and places them successively into wringers and dryers for measured time cycles. Sorts dried articles according to identification numbers or type. Folds and places items in appropriate storage bins. Lubricates machines, using grease gun and oil can. May dissolve soap granules in hot water and steam to make liquid soap. May mend torn articles using needles and thread. Disposes of blood contaminated items using correct handling procedures for hazardous materials. Has no access to patient data. Interacts with other laundry workers. Works under the specific direction of Laundry Foreman. No formal education required. Ability to understand English and carry out instructions. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Ability to sew and repair simple tears in materials. Exposure to extremes in heat and steam and slippery floors. Works with cleaning agents that may be toxic. Must work alternating weekends. May rotate shifts. 3 -- Nursing Assistant Job Description: Provides varied medical support services. Bathes patients as needed. Cleans and shaves patients. Measures and record intake and output of liquids. Takes and record temperatures, pulse and respiration rate. Carries meal trays to patients. Frequently lifts patients onto and from bed and transports patients onto and from bad. Transports patients to hospital areas such as X-ray or physical therapy. Assists in setting up equipment such as EKG, bone fracture equipment, portable X-ray machines. Assists medical staff in holding patient on tables during administration of medications and inputting on casts and braces. Makes beds and collects soiled linen. Assists ambulatory patients with routine in-ward exercise. May be exposed to confidential patient data. Works under direction of shift nursing supervisor. High school diploma or GED preferred. Washington Certification as a nursing assistant. At least six months experience. Ability to work well with people. Ability to read and write. Ability to lift and move patients. 4 -- Radiology Technician Job Description: Applies roentgen rays and radioactive substances to patients for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Positions patient under X-ray machine, adjusts immobilized devices and affixes lead shield. Aligns patent between source of X-rays and film of plate. Masks peripheral areas with lead shield. Verifies radiation intensities using radiation meters. Removes and develops film or plate. Monitors working area using survey meters to protect personnel area. Marks defects appearing on film and assists in analyzing findings. Directs or escorts incoming patients or visitors from hospital admitting office or reception desk to designated area in the hospital. Carries patients luggage as needed. Assists patients in walking to prevent accidents. Transports non ambulatory patients using wheelchair. Using a wheelchair, assists departing patients to leave hospital. Delivers messages and files for office staff as needed. Sorts incoming mail and delivers mail to appropriate wards or units on an as needed basis. Has little access to patient data. Works under general direction radiolgoy department chief. Requires two year associates degree or four years of experience as an radiology technician. Ability to work well with people. Ability to read and write. Certification preferred. Works with radioactive materials using protective devices. 5 -- Administrative Associate - Patient Services Under general supervision and following established procedures and protocols, schedules, receives and/or registers patients, visitors and staff for appointments or procedures. Collects, verifies and records required information, obtains records, files and/or results for appointments/admissions and meetings and enters related information on hospital and departmental computer systems. Answers, screens, and routes telephone calls and performs general office support tasks such as opening and sorting mail, ordering supplies and maintaining logs and records. Composes routine correspondence and completes standardized forms as needed. Requires a high school level of educational development, one to two years of previous experience, analytical skills and judgment to interpret data and take appropriate action. The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations is necessary. Requires the ability to edit, transcribe and manipulate data using existing computer equipment. 30.0 hr/wk. 6 -- Admissions Aide Greets and interviews patients and families in a manner that contributes to a consumer service, patient centered environment. Ensures that patient data and all required documentation is collected accurately and sensitively in order to provide a patient database that supports the clinical and financial needs of the hospital. Contributes to expeditious patient flow and advocacy through collaboration with clinical and financial staff. Work requires a high school level of educational development and one to two years of previous experience. Work requires the analytical skills and judgment to interpret data and take appropriate action in circumstances and situations which vary. Work requires the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations. 40.0 hr/wk.; Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm 7 -- Attendant, Garage -- Parking Provides patients, visitors, and employees with a parking space or valet service. Take utmost care to prevent injuries and to avoid damage to vehicles. Spends the majority of the time in an open garage area where there will be a heavy volume of traffic. Exposure to extreme weather conditions. Exposure to exhaust fumes, dirt, and poor lighting conditions. There will be occasional instances of overtime. Frequent overcrowding of the garage imposes to meet customer demands. Requires valid and current Massachusetts Driver's License, a good driving record, and excellent driving and parking skills, typically acquired through at least one year of driving experience. Must be able to drive a standard shift vehicle. Must be able to communicate well in English; knowledge of Spanish is helpful. Requires a great deal of diplomacy, patience, and tact in dealing with customers who can be distraught, angry, or abusive. 40.0 hr/wk. 8 -- Billing Coordinator Provide professional, service-oriented assistance to patients, secretaries and physicians in any billing related matter that may arise. Interact with patients on a daily basis regarding registration forms, required insurance information and billing problems. Verify insurance coverage and terms. Maintain assigned accounts in an accurate and up-to-date manner. Oversee all regularly scheduled system back-ups, billing cycles and reporting. Act as a team member in all functions of the billing department. This position functions primarily within our in-house billing operation. Code office visit, consult and admission encounters and diagnoses utilizing ICD-9-CM and CPT manuals. An Associate's Degree and a minimum of 2-3 years of related work experience is required. Good communication, interpersonal, and problem solving skills are required. 9 -- Cardiology Ultrasonic Technician Under general supervision and following established procedures, methods and protocols, performs cardiac ultrasound examinations on patients in non-invasive lab, on inpatient units and at other institutions. Prioritizes, assigns and monitors work of technologists and provides training for technical and medical staff on echocardiography techniques and interpretation. Provides assistance on research projects, maintains and evaluates equipment, orders supplies and completes various logs and records. Work requires a high school level of educational development and up to one year of basic technical training in ultrasonography and two to three years of previous experience. Work requires the analytical skills to resolve complex problems requiring the use of scientific, mathematical, or technical principles and in-depth, experience-based knowledge. Work requires communication skills in order to effectively deal with conflicting views or issues and mediate fair solutions, or well-developed writing skills. 40.0 hr/wk. 10 -- Junior Accountant Job Description: Screens and verifies accounting-related data and documents. Aids in preparation of journal entries, trial balances, fiscal and statistical reports; aids in establishing financial records and procedures and fiscal controls; and answers inquiries and provides technical information regarding the status of budget accounts. Deals directly with confidential client financial records. Consequence of error is moderate with all work verified by project leader. Works under the general supervision of accountant as part of the business management team. Requires knowledge of accounting principles, practices and procedures. Requires a college degree with a major in accounting or business administration with a minimum of 18 semester hours in accounting. No prior experience required. 11 -- Accountant Job Description: Devises and installs special accounting systems and related procedures as needed. Sets up classification of accounts and organizes accounting procedures and machine methods support. Applies principles of cost accounting to provide management with detailed cost data. Plans, implements and directs cost finding and reporting system. Screens and verifies journal entries, trial balances, fiscal and statistical reports; Sets up financial records and procedures and fiscal controls; and answers inquiries and provides technical information regarding the status of budget accounts. Deals directly with confidential client financial records. Consequence of error is high with potential ramifications for client and for the firm. As needed meets with clients to determine accounting needs and to resolve problems.Works under the general supervision of Business Manager. As needed, supervises junior accountants assigned to the accounting engagement. Gives routine work to junior and administrative secretary. Provides input for the evaluation of secretary and clerk typist. Requires knowledge of accounting principles, practices and procedures. Requires a college degree with a major in accounting or business administration and CPA. Three to five years general accounting experience. 12 --Unit Secretary Job Description: Word processes patient data on computer; operates duplicating equipment and other standard office equipment; receives, distributes and dispatches mail to patients. Performs varied clerical work such as indexing and filing; Receives orders and matches orders to invoice; Records, dates and files patient data in charts as required. Handles multi-line telephone system. Consequence of error is low. Deals patients, staff and medical personnel. Requires graduation from high school or its equivalent. Requires 1 year of general office skills. Computer literate in MS Word, Excel preferred. Strong interpersonal and communication skills essential. 13 -- File Clerk Job Description: Maintains correspondence, cards, invoices or other classified or indexed records arranged systematically in a file according to an established system. Following general instructions, inserts and removes material upon request and notes its disposition. May perform related routine clerical duties as requested. Consequence of error is low. However, may misfile important papers. Works under the direction of unit secretary. Requires basic reading and writing skill. Ability to sort and alphabetize materials. Some eye strain. 14 -- Registered Nurse Provides professional nursing care for ill, injured, convalescent and handicapped children in hospital.. Provide leadership for specific program areas and unit functions such as developing education programs, acting as clinical resource for staff, and coordinating daily operations;. Assist the Nurse Manager to develop, maintain, and evaluate the on-going operations of a clinical area. As needed, takes and records temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration rate. Dresses wounds. Observes patients and reports adverse reactions to medical personnel in charge. Administers specified medication and notes time and amount on patient charts. Assembles and uses such equipment as catheters, tracheotomy tubs and oxygen suppliers. Records food and fluid intake and output as needed. Bathes, dresses and assists patients in walking and turning. May be required to wash and dress bodies of children as well as deceased persons. Works under the general direction of nursing manager and under the specific supervision of shift lead nurse. As needed, directs the work of nurses assistants and consults with family members on treatment plan. Minimum qualifications include a current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Washington AND two years of professional nursing experience OR equivalent education/experience. Excellent interpersonal and teaming skills. 15 -- Employment Representative 1 Recruits, interviews, and negotiates hiring of applicants for open positions. Advises and assists managers in interpretation of hospital policy and procedures. Advises and counsels employees in professional development, and dealing with difficult situations in their job. Functions as a resource of information to hospital employees in all areas of Human Resources, i.e. compensation, benefits, employee relations, and employment. Conducts new employee orientation and other Human Resource-related programs. Work requires the level of knowledge typically acquired through completion of two years of occupation-specific education or an Associates degree in human resources or a closely related field and two to three years of previous experience. Works collaboratively with Clinical Coding Coordinator to identify and recommend strategies for process improvement. Prepare reports on results of audit for Clinical Coding Coordinator and other Hospital management personnel as appropriate. Work requires the level of knowledge typically acquired through completion of a Bachelors degree in Health Information Management or Nursing and three to four years of medical coding reimbursement experience such as ICD-9 and CPT coding. Works with an interdisciplinary team in development products which will be disseminated nationally addressing the issues of training needs in the field of disabilities and promoting placement of persons with disabilities. Performs a clinical interview and includes appropriate information on the referral, discusses the reason for the referral with the family or with the referral source, and makes appropriate clinical decisions about the appropriate program for the child's evaluation. Meets with families when there is an urgent need for response and also when it is unclear by telephone interview which program is appropriate. This person will work under the supervision of the medical director. and with all program directors. Establishes and supports a monitoring system to evaluate the appropriateness of referrals to the various programs, as well as patient and referral source satisfaction both with the referral and evaluation. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or Master's Degree in Social Work, Education or Child Development field required. Must be Board registered or board-eligible diagnostic medical sonographer, preferably with R.T. and pediatric experiences and a minimum of one year of ultrasonography experience. Supervises a staff of approximately 13 on strategies for major gift, planned gift, and annual fund solicitations. Builds relationships and manages internal and external audiences to identify prospective donors and match their interests with the financial needs of programs and services--clinical, research, and administrative--throughout the medical center. Maintains close working relationship with the president, senior administrators and medical staff, members of the Boards of Trustees and Overseers, and others from throughout the hospital and from all other specific and general hospital constituencies. Works in collaboration with the medical records management team to plan and establish departmental policies, procedures, work methods and equipment innovations to maintain cost effective operations within the department, subject to general administrative review and approval.
